Listener Gathering in Bangkok

On May 14 2017 our Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) team conducted a Listener Gathering for people who tune in to our “Because You Are Loved” radio program in Bangbon District in Bangkok. We all met at Ruamprakun Church for 2 hours of relationship building and sharing through some fun activities, songs and conversations.

A total of 48 people attended, 34 of whom were regular listeners to our program. This number also includes 8 participants who were not Christians.

We have a good relationship with Pastor Somkiet Limpisook, because we did a Listener Gathering at his church 5 years ago with Mr. Chumpol Khumpanyam, our radio speaker for the “Because You Are Loved” radio program. Pastor Somkiet has always done a very good job of following up with listeners that our team refers to his church, so we were happy to work with him again.

Everyone had a good time together during the Listener Gathering and some contacts were made. Pastor Somkiet prayed for a mother and daughter who were interested in learning more about Jesus and he will contact them again in the near future. They have listened to our radio programs for a while, but this was their first visit to a church.

Pastor Somkiet prayed for Mrs. Kesorn and her daughter.

We thank God for safe travel and for good interactions with the listeners and others who attended. We pray that God will to work in their hearts and minds as they continue to listen to our radio programs.

Focusing on Young People

On April 7-8, 2017 our LHM Thailand staff had a great opportunity to share about our ministry programs with youth who came together in Nakhon Nayok Province to attend the Youth for Christ Youth Challenge 2017.  More than 800 young people from throughout Thailand attended this special event.

This is the third time that we have helped Youth for Christ with this program that is held every 4 years.  In addition to setting up our ministry booth we also were able to conduct a product sale with many items from our Christian bookstore.

By the end of our time there 350 youth had signed up to begin receiving our encouraging Gospel text messages on their mobile phones each week and 147 enrolled in our Bible Correspondence Course.

We thank God that we were able to do 2 special presentations on April 8 about our ministry activities for all of the participants who were interested in knowing more about Christian media ministry and to talk with many of them personally.

Long Term Relationship Continues to Grow

Some of the participants gathered for a group picture

The first time that our LHM Thailand team was introduced to the Thai-Ezra Evangelistic Ministry was when they invited us to conduct an Equipping the Saints training workshop for their association members.  Each of the 4 years since then we have been assisting with their annual church camp.  This year more than 250 adults and children from 26 churches came together for the camp. Tuesday, April 4, 2017 was the first day of the camp and our team enjoyed leading the people in a variety of songs and games.  The campers were divided into 5 groups, each group identified by a different color, so we planned activities at 5 stations.  The groups spent 15 minutes at each station and then rotated until they completed all of the stations.

On Wednesday, April 5, 2017 our team led more games and activities for the campers, but this time we didn’t use the stations.  We had all of the adults and children participate together in one large group.  We had a good time leading the activities and getting to meet more new people.  At the end of the day we also conducted the closing activity for the camp.

One of the pastors we got to know during the camp was from Thai Wanorn Church.  He is very interested in receiving all of our radio programs to broadcast on his church’s radio station.  Some of the churches want to receive our Bible Correspondence Courses to use for their outreach programs.  Seven youth signed up to begin receiving our weekly encouraging Gospel text messages on their cell phones.

We’re happy to continue developing our relationship with the Thai-Ezra Evangelistic Ministry and we look forward to interacting with them again in the future.

Listener Gathering in Konburi, Ratchasima Province

On Friday, March 17, 2017 some of our Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) staff traveled 6 hours to Konburi District in Nakhonratchasima Province.  In 2016 our LHMT team conducted an Equipping the Saints training at Konburi Church and the church airs 3 LHMT radio programs on its community radio station, so we agreed to do a Listener Gathering there this year.

Mrs. Tongtip Hanpradit, the speaker of Relieve Your Worries

Although the main purpose for the trip was to conduct the Listener Gathering at Konburi Church on Saturday, March 18, one of our radio speakers was able to do a live broadcast on Konburi Church’s radio station shortly after our team arrived.  During the “Relieve Your Worries” broadcast the speaker invited listeners to attend the Listener Gathering the next morning.

A total of 87 people responded to the invitation and participated in the Listener Gathering from 10:00 a. m. – 12:00 noon.  Everyone enjoyed the activities and meeting our LHMT staff and radio speaker.

When our team returned to Bangkok Saturday evening they were tired but very happy that they were able to introduce so many people to the pastor and members of Konburi Church.

We thank God for safe travel and pray for the follow-up activities that Konburi Church will be doing with the people who attended the Listener Gathering.

Special Program for Children’s Day

January 14, 2017 was the third time that our Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) director and staff conducted a program on Children’s Day for children of families in the 21st Signal Operations Battalion Supreme in Saphan Mai, Bangkok. From 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. 53 children had lots of fun participating in a variety of outside games.

Our team has a good relationship with Colonel Attapong Pugahn, who is in charge of the 21st Signal Operations Battalion Supreme. He personally asked for LHMT to conduct the program again this year for the families under his command. The Colonel and many of his staff know our LHMT team well from the previous Children’s Day programs we did with them in 2014 and 2015.

Colonel Attapong was a student at Assumption Catholic School and his sister is a Christian, so he is very familiar with Christian beliefs. He allowed our LHMT staff to lead everyone in a prayer for the children and for Thailand.

In addition to receiving prizes during the activities, at the end of the morning all of the children were given gift sets containing a coloring book, crayons, candy, a plastic water bottle, Christian tracts and a copy of the LHMT children’s Bible Correspondence Course.

We thank God that everything went well and for the good relationship that we have with Colonel Attapong, his staff and the families in the 21st Signal Operations Battalion Supreme. We hope to build on that relationship as the Colonel also invited our LHMT team to lead their children summer camp  in the future.

Looking Forward to Doing Ministry Activities in 2017

As we look ahead to the last half of our 2016-2017 fiscal year, our Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) team is excited about the opportunities that the Lord has given us to serve Him.

We always enjoy doing special activities with children.  This year on Children’s Day in January we will again be doing a program with the families from the 21st Signal Operations Battalion Supreme here in Bangkok.  The Children’s Day programs we have done with them in the past have been well received and some good relationships have been started.

We will travel to Uttaradit Province in February to conduct an Equipping the Saints evangelism training workshop.

In March our team has two programs scheduled.  In Nakorn Ratchasima Province we will do a Listener Gathering and then we will lead an Equipping the Saints training workshop in Nakon Pathom Province.

Two unique activities are on our calendar for April.  Our LHMT team will help conduct an annual church camp in Chaiyaphum Province and  we will do a ministry booth and product sale for the Youth for Christ Youth Challenge in Nakon Nayok Province, which is held every 4 years.  At least 800 youth are expected to attend.  We have enjoyed working with this program in the past.

The last ministry program that we have scheduled for this fiscal year is a Listener Gathering in May in Bangkok.

We thank God that we are able to be involved in these ministry programs throughout Thailand, that we are able to bring the Gospel to many people who have never heard the name of Jesus and that we have developed so many good relationships with pastors, church members and people from other Christian organizations serving Christ in Thailand.

Please pray for our safe travel and for God’s blessings on us as we serve Him in the coming months.

Special LHMT Gifts Help Thai People Mourn Their King

After reigning in Thailand for 70 years King Bhumibol Adulyadej, also known as King Rama IX of Thailand, passed away on October 13, 2016.  In honor or his birthday on December 5 and to assist some Thai people in mourning their king, our Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) director and staff are conducting a special activity.

On December 5-7, 2016 the LHMT team is setting up a table in front of our ministry center in Bangkok.  We are giving away free gift packs to anyone who stops at the table and leaves their names and contact information.  The gift packs included a black handkerchief with a simple white design and white and black wristbands with a message of remembrance of His Majesty The King, Rama IX written on it.  We are very pleased that we were able to give away nearly 1,000 gift packs today.

For at least 100 days the Thai people are wearing black in mourning the king.  Government workers will be wearing black for an entire year.  The LHMT gifts are a way to serve people in the community near our ministry center and a means for our team to meet people and to do some follow-up contacts with them.
