Looking Forward to Doing Ministry Activities in 2017

As we look ahead to the last half of our 2016-2017 fiscal year, our Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) team is excited about the opportunities that the Lord has given us to serve Him.

We always enjoy doing special activities with children.  This year on Children’s Day in January we will again be doing a program with the families from the 21st Signal Operations Battalion Supreme here in Bangkok.  The Children’s Day programs we have done with them in the past have been well received and some good relationships have been started.

We will travel to Uttaradit Province in February to conduct an Equipping the Saints evangelism training workshop.

In March our team has two programs scheduled.  In Nakorn Ratchasima Province we will do a Listener Gathering and then we will lead an Equipping the Saints training workshop in Nakon Pathom Province.

Two unique activities are on our calendar for April.  Our LHMT team will help conduct an annual church camp in Chaiyaphum Province and  we will do a ministry booth and product sale for the Youth for Christ Youth Challenge in Nakon Nayok Province, which is held every 4 years.  At least 800 youth are expected to attend.  We have enjoyed working with this program in the past.

The last ministry program that we have scheduled for this fiscal year is a Listener Gathering in May in Bangkok.

We thank God that we are able to be involved in these ministry programs throughout Thailand, that we are able to bring the Gospel to many people who have never heard the name of Jesus and that we have developed so many good relationships with pastors, church members and people from other Christian organizations serving Christ in Thailand.

Please pray for our safe travel and for God’s blessings on us as we serve Him in the coming months.

Mother’s Day Activity at Our Ministry Center

4Mother15To help people in the community surrounding our Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) ministry center celebrate Mother’s Day on August 12 our staff conducted a special activity on August 4 and 5. In front of our Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) ministry center our team set up a table with some special Mother’s Day materials and a microphone and speakers.

Using Christian and secular music that honors mothers our LHMT team attracted the attention of local vendors and people passing by on their way to work.

We invited people to stop by and register with us to receive the materials and some candy and to have a chance to win free Mother’s Day T-shirts. On August 4, while going to work and during their lunch break, 157 people filled out our registration form and collected their free materials. At the end of the day the names of 5 people were drawn and they received their free T-shirts.

On August 5 another 153 people registered with us. Everyone enjoyed the Jasmine Mother’s Day pin and the card with a Bible verse inside. Those who won the Mother’s Day shirts were very happy. Some looked forward to wearing them on Mother’s Day, others planned to give them as Mother’s Day gifts to their mothers.

Several people asked why we were doing this activity. That gave us a great opportunity to talk about God’s love and the joy we have in giving to others.

5Mother11In addition to providing some materials for the people, through this activity we were able to meet and interact with shop owners and staff who work near us and some of the people who walk by our ministry center every day. We had a chance to tell them who we are and what we do and to begin building relationships with them.

Using the personal contact information they gave us on the registration form we will be able to do some follow-up activities to get in touch with them again in the coming days. We pray that we can continue to interact with them and get to know them better.

Ministry Booth and Product Sale

Two staff members from Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) set up a ministry booth and sold a variety of products from the LHMT Christian bookstore on Sunday, July 17, 2016. Pak Kred Church, which is located just outside Bangkok, invited our staff to sell Bibles, Christian books and materials, T-shirts, jewelry, music CDs and other products to their church members and staff before and after the worship service.

LHMT has had a good relationship with Pak Kred Church and some of their members have purchased items from our bookstore in the past. There are only a few Christian bookstores in Bangkok, so it’s not convenient for the church members to buy Christian materials. Because most of them work during the week, they aren’t able to visit a Christian bookstore during the normal business hours.

The pastor and church members of Pak Kred Church are very appreciative when our staff conduct a product sale at their church on a Sunday morning. They are happy that they can materials to encourage them and strengthen their faith, T-shirts and jewelry that they can wear to express their Christian identity and nice gifts that they can give to their Christian friends and family members.

Product sales at churches also are helpful to our LHMT ministry, because it is one form of local fund raising that we do to help support our ministry activities. We thank God for our relationship with Pak Kred Church and we pray that the items purchased by the church members will be blessings to them.

Thai New Year Gifts

Songkran Booth8On April 13 every year people throughout Thailand celebrate the Songkran Holiday, which is the Thai New Year Day. The traditions include lots of people pouring lots of water on each other.

As a way of celebrating Songkran and to connect with people in the community surrounding our ministry center in Bangkok, our staff gave out free plastic pouches that people could wear around their necks.  Because they could be used to protect mobile phones and other valuables from getting wet, these gifts are very practical.  As a result, in less than one hour nearly 200 people signed up for these gifts.

This was a great way to serve our neighbors and people who work nearby and to make personal contacts with them. Inside the pouches we included a tract about families and another Gospel tract.  Using the personal contact information that they gave us, our staff will make follow-up contacts with each person in the coming weeks.

Product Sale is a Blessing for LHMT and a Local Church

In addition to their regular work, the Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) director and staff are willing to help with local fund raising and other activities that benefit our ministry.

Early Sunday morning, April 3, 2016, two LHMT staff packed up a variety of Christian books, music CDs, crosses, T-shirts, jewelry and other items from the LHMT Christian bookstore and drove to Nazarene Church in Bangkok.  After worshiping and personally interacting with the church members, the LHMT staff conducted a product sale at the church.  They also took some ministry materials with them and talked with people about LHMT ministry programs.

In addition to raising some local funds to help support LHMT ministry activities, the product sale gives our staff a chance to meet and begin building relationships with the pastor and church members.  Also, the product sale provides an opportunity for the church members to purchase some Christian items that they may not be able to get very easily, since there are only a few Christian bookstores in Bangkok.

A Good Opportunity to Inform Church Representatives

On March 29-31, 2016 two Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) staff attended a general meeting of the Evangelical Fellowship of Thailand (EFT) in Chiang Mai Province in northern Thailand.  EFT is the organization through which LHMT is officially registered with the Thai government.  As LHMT representatives they attended the meetings and other sessions.  They also set up a ministry booth to inform the participants about the LHMT radio programs, text messaging and Equipping the Saints evangelistic training.  More than 400 people joined the meeting.

Many church leaders visited our ministry booth and showed a lot of interest in learning more about our ministry and the possibility of partnering with us in the future.  We thank God for these new connections and that our two staff returned home safely.

More than Jewelry

Booth1In an effort to make contact with more people in the community surrounding the Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) ministry center in Bangkok and to share the Gospel, the LHMT staff set up a table next to the street in front of the entrance to their building. On March 28 and 29, 2016, the two days after Easter, the LHMT team handed out free cross necklaces and booklets.  The booklets explained that the cross is not just jewelry, but it is a symbol reminding Christians of the death of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins.  In the booklet the people also could read that Jesus arose from the dead on Easter Sunday and is still alive today.

The LHMT team also was broadcasting one of the LHMT radio programs about the meaning of Easter through a sound system near the table. To receive these free gifts the individuals who stopped at the table only had to provide their personal contact information so that LHMT staff can do follow-up activities with them in the future.  More than 150 people accepted the necklaces and booklets.  The LHMT Audience Relations Department will be reaching out to them in the coming weeks.
