LHM Thailand Director Participates in Couples Seminar

Our Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) director and her husband joined a couples seminar sponsored by the Thailand Concordia Lutheran Church (TCLC) from June 1-3, 2016.  The seminar was held in Khao Lak, Phang Nga Province in southern Thailand and attended by 7 TCLC pastors, several church leaders and their wives.  Our LHMT director is the secretary of the TCLC leadership committee.

In spite of experiencing heavy rains every day our director is thankful for the chance to attend the seminar.  Not only did she learn some good ideas about strengthening her relationship with her husband, but she also was able to interact more personally with the pastors and church leaders and to get to know them better.

Former Chairman of the Evangelical Fellowship of Thailand, Rev. Dr. Silawech Kanjanamukda  and his wife were the main speakers and TCLC chairman, Rev. Ted Na Thalang and his wife led the couples in some special activities.

Christmas Activity Follow-Up

After we completed our Christmas activity in front of our Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) ministry center on December 24 and 25, 2015, we were able to connect some people who participated in that activity with Concordia Into Light Lutheran Church here in Bangkok.  Of the 17 people who initially signed up, a  total of 10 people attended the first two free English classes offered by the church.

Those who attended were from a variety of situations, including some high school students, a travel agent, a motorcycle taxi driver, a maid, a lady who does Thai massage and a retired man.  This was the first time that any of them had ever been in a church building.  Pastor Sompong Hanpradit, the LHMT director and some staff assisted LCMS missionary Dennis Denow and long term volunteer Robin McCoy with the English classes.

Offering English classes is one way in which the pastor and some church members can meet more people in the community and begin building relationships with them.  It is in the context of these repeated contacts and relationships that opportunities for sharing the Gospel will happen.

We pray that the people who are attending these free English classes will enroll in the full-time English classes offered by the church and that they will come to know who Jesus is and what he has done for them.

Jesus Christ, the Reason for the Season

Many of the friends, neighbors and church members who attended the Christmas party.

For the past several years our Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) director and staff have assisted Concordia Into Light Lutheran Church in Bangkok with their special Christmas activity.

From 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening, December 12, 2015, the church conducted a program of games and Christmas songs to celebrate the birth of Jesus.  More than 100 people from the community and parents and students from the church’s English classes attended the event, which was held in the parking area in front of the church.  A noodle dish, spring rolls, fruit and delicious ice cream were available for everyone to enjoy and free gifts were given to almost everyone who completed a simple registration card.

In addition to having the whole group sing some Christmas songs together, the program included special songs sung by students from the Luther Institute Southeast Asia theological training program, children from the Concordia Day Care Center in Bangna and a Thai-style dance was performed by one of the English students about the baby Jesus in the manger .  The church’s pastor, Rev. Sompong Hanpradit, who is also a member of the LHMT Advocacy Board, gave a short message about the theme for the evening, which was “Jesus Christ, the Reason for the Season.”

The LHMT director and staff helped set up and decorate the venue, led the group singing and fun activities, provided technical support, introduced the attendees to the LHMT Bible Correspondence Courses and ministry programs and had personal conversations with people from the community.  Since the LHMT ministry center is located just a short walk from the church, this also was a chance for more local people to learn about the work of LHMT.

Many Thai people have joined Christmas parties that highlight stories about Santa Claus and his reindeer, but seldom have the opportunity to hear the real reason for celebrating Christmas.  Concordia Into Light Lutheran Church uses this event each December to point people to Jesus and what He has done for them.  The LHMT team is happy to partner with the church to encourage Christians and to share the real Christmas story with people in the community who haven’t heard the good news that Jesus was born to bring forgiveness of sins and eternal life to everyone who believes in Him.

LHM Thailand Team Enjoys Camping with Students

???????????????????????????????From April 6-10, 2015 the Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) director and staff participated in and helped lead an English Camp for Concordia Into Light Lutheran Church (CILLC) in Bangkok.  The English Camp was part of the outreach that CILLC does through English classes that are offered at Into Light Center.  Some of their English practice was done through Christian songs and holidays.

With the help of the LHMT team it was possible for the church to do the English Camp.  Some team members led the songs, others helped with small group discussions and activities, some prepared materials that were used during the Camp.

About 16 young adults registered to attend the Camp in addition to the LHMT team members.  This was a good opportunity for the LHMT team members to also learn more about English and to be able to practice using English in a very practical manner.

The English Camp was led by a married couple, Jane Dunfield and Roger Wanner,  who heard about this opportunity to teach English classes at Into Light Center and to plan and conduct the Camp from one of the LHM staff in St. Louis.

It was good to have the 2 short term volunteers, the LHMT director and staff, 1 long term volunteer at Into Light Center, a few CILLC members and 1 LCMS missionary all work together in conducting the English Camp.  Everyone is hoping that there will be another activity in the future in which they all can partner together in ministry.

Supporting a Supporter

???????????????????????????????Ajarn Sumalee Singtoh is a good supporter of Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT).  She and her husband, Pastor Aekapong, and some church members have attended LHMT’s annual Thanksgiving Banquet the past few years and participated in the Fun with English program that LHMT provided.

Saturday, September 20, 2014 was a chance for the LHMT director and staff to support Ajarn Sumalee.  That was the day when Ajarn Sumalee was ordained as a pastor with the Church of Christ in Thailand.  One LHMT staff member performed a traditional Thai dance, the LHMT team sang a song and planned some special activities during the celebration.  The LHMT director gave a short message of congratulations and encouragement during the lunch.

Ajarn Sumalee has become a good friend of LHMT and the director and team were very happy to be able to support her on this special day.

During the lunch time the LHMT director was introduced to a number of pastors and others involved in ministry at different churches.  As a result of those conversations the director is planning a Listener Gathering, an Equipping the Saints Training and Christmas outreach activity with those churches.

The LHMT team pray for a long relationship with Ajarn Sumalee and her church and hope to do some outreach activities with them in the future.

Serving as One in Christ

Group picture at the end of the annual meeting

When the Thailand Concordia Lutheran Church (TCLC) held its annual meeting on April 24-26, 2012, the Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) director, Mrs. Boom Ekwanit Denow and one of her staff, Miss Nok attended.

In addition to serving as the secretary of the TCLC committee, the director also did a presentation about the various LHMT ministries to the pastors and other congregation leaders in attendance.  In the past LHMT has done ministry with a few of the TCLC congregations, but most of the others were not familiar with LHMT, because they joined TCLC only recently.

The participants who attended the meeting serve TCLC congregations that are located in northern Thailand, in Bangkok and in southern Thailand.

Because the TCLC is still a young church body, this year’s meeting focused on helping the pastors and other leaders become better acquainted with each other.  A representative from each congregation and organization presented an overview of their ministries and everyone participated in some team building activities.

Under the theme “Serving as One in Christ” the sessions focused on getting to know each other better and learning about each other’s ministries, so that the TCLC members can better support and encourage each other and possibly do more ministry activities together.

We thank God for blessing our meetings and times of fun and fellowship.  LHMT looks forward to working with these pastors and church leaders in the months ahead.
