Activity for Remembrance of King Rama IX of Thailand

On October 13, 2016 the king of Thailand passed away after reigning for 70 years. During the weeks of mourning that followed the death of His Majesty Bhumibol Adulyudej Rama IX, more than 30,000 Thai people visited the Grand Palace each day to pay their respects to the king.

The Evangelical Fellowship of Thailand (EFT), the Christian organization through which Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) is registered with the Thai government, provided lunch packs and bottles of drinking water to 3,000 people who gathered there on November 24, 2016.  LHMT was happy to provide four staff members to assist the EFT with this activity.

LHM Thailand Team Participates in Memorial Service

On November 12, 2016 the Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) director and staff were invited to participate in a memorial service for Mrs. Staporn Gernand, the mother of Rev. Ted Na Thalang, the Chairman of the Thailand Concordia Lutheran Church and Asia representative for the Lutheran Heritage Foundation.  Mrs. Gernand also was the mother-in-law of the Lutheran Hour Ministries Asia Regional Director, Mrs. Gunya Na Thalang.  The service was conducted in the town of Takuapa in Phang Nga Province in Southern Thailand.

One of the LHMT studio technicians led the music for the memorial service and the other staff sang and distributed Christian materials to the more than 500 people who attended.  The materials included a Thai translation of the Lutheran Hour booklet, “Why Do Bad Things Happen?”  Since more than 90% of the people who joined the Christian service were Buddhists, this was a unique opportunity for them to hear the Gospel and to receive Christian materials.

Dr. Douglas Rutt, Director of International Ministries for Lutheran Hour Ministries, gave a message of encouragement to Mrs. Gernand’s family and friends.  Rose Sirintip Hanpradit, who recorded a Christian music album with LHMT before becoming a well-known pop singer in Thailand, sang “Take Your Wounded Heart to the Cross” and “I Don’t Know About Tomorrow.”

We pray for God’s comfort for the family and that the Holy Spirit will use the Gospel messages and materials to help many people come to know who Jesus is and what He has done for them.

ETS Workshop in Chonburi

A total of 111 people from 13 churches in Chonburi Province attended an Equipping the Saints (ETS) evangelism workshop conducted by our Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) staff on October 15, 2016. The host church was Cross of Chonburi Church, which is located in Muang District.

Throughout the day the LHMT team led the participants in songs and fun activities and taught them about the reasons and methods for doing evangelistic outreach. The people were very interested in learning and joined in the program very enthusiastically.

At the end of the day 54 people asked to become LHMT commissioned volunteers and105 applied to begin receiving encouraging Gospel text messages on their mobile phones each week.

Au Udom Church asked to receive Children’s Bible Correspondence Courses that they could use for the youth in their church. LHMT is very happy to supply them with those materials.

Also, the Chonburi Church Association asked LHMT to do our school outreach program in their area in December 2017.

We thank God for blessing this training and for the good connections with the churches in that area.
