Sharing God’s Love with Our Neighbors

Mother's Day Activities16In Thailand August 12 is a special holiday. In addition to being Queen Sirikit’s birthday, it’s also Mother’s Day. Each year on August 12 Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) honors Queen Sirikit and all Thai mothers by conducting special activities on the sidewalk in front of the LHMT building. It’s a good day to show support for the value of family, to say thank-you to mothers and to celebrate with our neighbors.

From 7:30 am – 8:30 am and 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm on August 7-9, 2013 some of our LHMT staff set up a sound system and table and invited neighbors and people passing by to receive prizes by participating in some simple activities. Each person also received a jasmine flower pin as a gift from LHMT that they could give to their mothers. By the end of the three days more than 200 people had stopped, talked with our staff, enjoyed the activities and given us their personal contact information. This is a good way for us to meet our neighbors and people who work in this area. This gives us a chance to build relationships and to let them know about our ministry. We are now making follow-up contacts with each of them.

That’s how we became good friends with Pairat Sriborom, the woman who works in the food shop next to our building. Khun Gae, as her friends call her, moved to Bangkok from Surin Province about five years ago with her husband, son and daughter and began selling food next door. Sometimes members of our LHMT team eat lunch in her shop. As Khun Gae has observed our ministry and the lives of our staff, she has become impressed by how we care about the people in our neighborhood.

Khun Gae told us that it really touched her heart when she saw how we did several special projects to provide relief packs for thousands of victims of the Thailand floods in 2011. She was surprised that we would work so hard to help others, while we also were victims of the floods.

When we did special activities in front of our building on different Thai holidays, Khun Gae liked the way that we did fun things and gave small gifts to people in our neighborhood.

One day Khun Gae told us that she wanted to join us on the next Thai holiday. She offered to donate free meals at her food shop as prizes to five people who participated in the activities in front of our building. Since that time Khun Gae has donated meals every holiday and some other food shops nearby have also followed her example by offering free meals and other prizes for us to give away.

We thank God that we have been able to build a close relationship with Khun Gae. Even though she is a Buddhist, she feels connected to our ministry. During Mother’s Day this year Khun Gae was very busy and didn’t have much time to buy a gift for her mother. We took that opportunity to give her a special jasmine flower lei that she could give to her mother.

Khun Gae says that she can see very clearly how much our LHMT team loves God and how we enjoy sharing God’s love with other people. We thank God for that and we pray that soon Khun Gae will also be able to see how much God loves her. Please pray for Khun Gae and her family.

LHMT Team Shared their Heart with Mahachai Christian Wittaya School

Mahachai Church in Mahachai Subdistrict, Muang, Samutsakhon Province has been using Christian radio programs produced by Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand (LHMT) on their community radio station for several years.  Until recently our LHMT staff never had a chance to personally meet anyone from the church.  But on August 2, 2013 that changed.  LHMT was invited to conduct a program for more than 250 students at Mahachai Christian Wittaya School, which is located in the area of Mahachai Church that owned and operated by The Church of Christ in Thailand (CCT).

The LHMT director and staff traveled two hours to the school and were able to meet the school director and the school manager for special activities at the school.  Everyone enjoyed finally meeting each other personally and our staff was happy to get to know more about the church and school.

The LHMT team was asked to help students better understand God’s love and how to share God’s love with each other.  Because many of the students are not Christians, this was a good opportunity to encourage Christian children and to share God’s love with non-Christian children at the same time.  From 9:00am until 10:00am the team lead grades 1-3 in singing Christian songs and children’s songs and some simple fun activities.  They also did a skit, “Sharing the Heart that We Have,” that demonstrated to the students how good it is to give your heart away by helping others.  Through helping others our hearts actually grow and become stronger.

At the end of the skit one of the LHMT team reviewed the meaning of the skit to be sure that all of the students understood it well.  Our team gave some prizes and led the children in some prayers and prayed for the school, the teachers, the administrators and for LHMT’s relationship with the school in the future.  After a short break our LHMT team repeated the program for grades 4-6 from 10:30am until 11:30am.

Before leaving the school the LHMT director and staff gave all of the students gift packs that contained some small gifts, a Christian tract and a copy of the LHMT Children’s Bible Correspondence Course.

We hope and pray that we can have more opportunities to do this type of activity at other Christian schools in the future.  We enjoyed working together with the school and helping their ministry through this program.  We were surprised and pleased to receive some special snacks and a donation for our ministry from the school.
