Most of the people in Thailand don’t know about Jesus.  Because they grew up in Buddhist families, they believe in Buddha.

tinley1 What are some of Thailand’s imports?

The main things that Thailand imports include machinery and parts, vehicles, electronic integrated circuits, chemicals, crude oil and fuels, iron and steel.

dodge4 What instruments do they have?

Guitars, keyboards and drums are very popular.  Many people play traditional Thai instruments, like phin, sueng, saw duang, khim, ranat ek, angklung and khlui.

dodge4 Do they have Buddah statues in the churches?

No, Thai Christians don’t believe in Buddha or pray to him. 

dodge4 Do you have cars?

We have many cars in Thailand, especially in Bangkok.  The traffic jams are some of the worst in the world. 

Are some people poor and rich?

Yes, we have some very rich people in Thailand, but more people are poor.

bloomington How much rubber is produced?

Thailand is the #1 producer of rubber in the world, producing about 3 million metric tons of rubber each year.

They learn some Western style dancing and Thai traditional dances.

bloomington Do you have Sunday School?

Most churches have Sunday School for children.

bloomington Do you have communion in worship services?

Yes, communion is very important to Thai Christians.

We usually eat rice for most meals with vegetables, soup and some meat or fish.  One popular food is Tom Yang Gung, a spicy soup.  We also enjoy eating curries with hot chili peppers.

bloomington Who discovered Thailand?

No one discovered Thailand.  People came here from China and other parts of Asia at least a thousand years ago.

bloomington How long did it take to recover from the Tsunami?

It took about 3-4 years to rebuild the bridges, hotels, homes and other buildings and for businesses to get back to normal.  But, for the families who lost loved ones in the tsunami, many of them .will never fully recover

Zach Anderson Do the people riding in the canals in their boats ever fall out?

The boat drivers and the people riding in the boats are very careful to make sure there are no accidents.

bloomington Where do the pastor’s go to seminary?

We have a number of seminaries from different denominations in Thailand.  Most of the seminaries are in Bangkok, but others are in other parts of Thailand.

huskers Is there a day where many buddhists go to a temple like we go to church on Sundays?

Buddhists don’t usually go to a temple to worship as a group each week like we do in church.  Besides Buddhist holidays, many Buddhists go to a temple 4 times each month on the day of the new moon, the first quarter, the full moon and the third quarter.

merrill2 Do they speak English?

Every school has English classes, so many Thai people can speak at least a little English.

Unfortunately, no, but we would like to have at least one international Lutheran school in Thailand someday.

merrill2 Do they bow down to statues/idols?

Thai Buddhists do bow down to statues and idols, but Thai Christians do not.

merrill2 Do the people of Thailand know Jesus?

Most Thai people know little or nothing about Jesus.  Only 1.6% of Thai people are Christians.

merrill2 What kinds of animals are native to Thailand?

Thailand has elephants, water buffaloes, monkeys, tigers, Asiatic black bear, cows, horses, dogs, cats, rabbits, crocodiles, porcupine and flying squirrels.

Thailand has freedom of religion, so there is no real persecution of Christians.  But, some parents or other family members sometimes cause problems for a member of the family who becomes a Christian.

dodge4 How much does it rain?

The rainy season begins about June 1 and ends in mid-October.  During that time Thailand usually gets about 59 inches of rain each year.

dodge4 Where do they swim in Thailand?

Southern Thailand has many beautiful beaches along the ocean where people can swim.  In other parts of Thailand people swim in the many rivers and canals.  Some schools and shopping malls have swimming pools.

No, Christians don’t  have spirit houses outside their homes or businesses.

Charlotte Fritsch It is a very beautiful area! Do you think it is better than before the disaster?

No, it was also very beautiful before the disaster.

napoleon Do birds ever try to go in the small ‘spirit houses’ they have outside their homes?

Sometimes birds go into the spirit houses.  If someone puts an offering of rice by the spirit house, the birds sometimes eat some of it.

Some Thai people are very rich and have very large houses.  Because grandparents, parents, children and other relatives often live in the same house, the houses need to be big enough for the number of people living there.

No, the tsunami in December 2004 was the first one.

We have Buddhist holidays for the birth and death of Buddha, for the day he did his first teaching, for when he became enlightened and reached Nirvana and some others.

I enjoy working in the garden, arranging flowers, shopping, reading, watching television and movies.

huskers If buddhists believe in reincarnation, where to they believe Siddharta Guatama (buddha) is today?

Buddhists believe that reincarnation is a way of giving people another chance to lead a good life and move closer to enlightenment and Nirvana.  When Siddharta Buatama became enlightened, he didn’t need to be reincarnated again.  He has reached the perfect state of being that others cannot understand, because they have not reached it.  So, no one can know where Buddha is.  Buddhists say that it’s best not to ask where Buddha is, because we can’t understand where he is.  Buddhists say that we shouldn’t wonder about where Buddha is, but we should just follow his teachings.  Then someday we will be there with him.

dodge4 Do you have many poisonous animals?

Thailand has poisonous snakes, scorpions, centipedes, spiders and fish.

The schools celebrate all of the official holidays in Thailand.

Dogs are the most common pet in Thailand.  Cats and rabbits are also popular pets.

In Thailand Mother’s Day is celebrated on August 12, which is the Queen’s birthday.

We have some fossils in northeastern Thailand.  We have some parks and museums dedicated to fossils.

Thai Christians do celebrate Easter and Christmas.  Some non-Christian Thai people also celebrate Christmas, but not as a religious holiday.

The former name of Thailand was Siam.  When the country changed from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy and became a democratic country in 1932, the country’s name was changed to Muang Thai (Thailand), which means’ Free Land.

Macaques are probably the most common monkey in Thailand.

Thailand doesn’t have lions, but we do have some tigers.

The weather in Thailand is always hot, usually between 78F and 98F, except in the mountains of northern Thailand.  There the temperature can drop as low as the mid 30sF at night in January.  But, we don’t have any snow.

huskers Do you have to be a buddhist t be involved in their government?

No, many Christians and Muslims have government positions.

troy What is the median income in Thailand?

I’m not sure about the median income, but the average income is about $800 per month or $9,600 per year.

Portbc Kindergarten wants to know if you have swimming pools?

Very few families have swimming pools, but some schools, shopping malls and communities have swimming pools.

napa Is it normal for most people to have short haircuts?

Many Thai people choose to have short haircuts.  Short hair looks neater, is easier to take care of and is more comfortable in the hot, humid Thai weather.

napa Do you celebrate birthdays, and if so, how do you celebrate?

We celebrate birthdays by having a party, eating cake, playing games and giving presents with family and friends.

Do you like ice cream?

Yes, ice cream is refreshing in the hot Thai weather.

napa Do you have amusement parks?

Bangkok and other big cities have some amusement parks.  Sometimes they’re located on the top of large shopping malls.

What are some of the clothing and shoe brand stores you have?

We have Gucci, Prada, Fendi and others of this quality, but they’re much too expensive for most Thai people.  We have Birkenstock, Bata, Taywin,  Naturalizer, Jimmy Choo, Prada and many brands of athletic shoes.

napa What types of cars are popular, and what do police cars and police stations look like?

The most popular car brands in Thailand are Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Kia.  We can also see quite a few Mercedes, BMWs, Volvo and Audi.

Many police cars are Toyotas with a bar of red lights on top, quite similar to police cars in North America.  Probably the most common type of police car is a pickup truck.

napa What are some popular toys? Do they have Sock Monkeys?

We don’t have Sock Monkeys.  Girls enjoy dolls (including Barbie) and boys like cars and trucks.  More children are playing computer games.

napa Are there baseball fields in Thailand?

Thai children don’t play baseball.  We usually only see baseball fields on the campuses of international schools.

napa Why did the Buddha think there are no gods?

Buddha knew that there are different kinds of gods, but he said that they can’t help anyone.  Everyone must earn merit by themselves. 

Why did he think you can become enlightened?

Buddha taught that people can become enlightened, because he said that he had become enlightened.

Yes, missionaries from some Scandanavian Lutheran churches had already started some Lutheran churches in Thailand.

Thailand is only 1.6% Christian, so there aren’t many churches of any denomination.  The number of Lutherans in Thailand is small, so there are only a few dozen Lutheran churches.

We have all the same electronics that you have in the United States, like televisions, computers, I-Pads, smart phones, GPS systems, satellite television stations and radio programs, etc.

One example of a happy meal in Thailand is the Happy Time set, which includes 4 fried chicken legs, 10 McNuggets, 3 cheese sticks, 1 corn pie, 1 pineapple pie and french fries.  With the meal children can buy Pokemon characters from the collection.

I don’t know the exact number, but in the past Bangkok had so many that people called it the Venice of the East.

No, abortion isn’t legal in Thailand, except in certain situations, like when the mother’s life is at stake.

alma Do the students ever have days that they do not have to wear their uniforms?

They don’t wear their regular uniforms on days when they have physical education class and when they go on field trips.

Thai New Year’s Day on April 13 is probably the biggest.

Here are some that are popular in Thailand with English proverbs that are similar:

Escape from the tiger and into the crocodile.  (Out of the frying pan and into the fire.)

One rotten fish makes the whole catch smell.  (One rotten apple spoils the whole barrel.)

Fire one shot and get two birds.  (Kill two birds with one stone.)

If you love a cow, tie it up; if you love your child, beat him.  (Spare the rod and spoil the child.)

Because of their beauty and sweet smell, flowers are sometimes given as offerings.

Because gold is so precious and beautiful, using gold on a Buddha image shows honor and respect.  Not all Buddha images are gold.  Many other Buddhas are carved from wood, stone or made of cement.
