The boats are built very well, so they don’t tip over easily

Because so many children live near the ocean, rivers or canals, most of them enjoy swimming.

The most common pets are dogs and cats, but some children also have rabbits, birds or goldfish as pets.

Leticia Navarro Is short hair mandatory necessary for school or is it the style?

In some schools short hair is mandatory, but some schools allow long hair.  Because the weather is always hot in Thailand, many people prefer to have short hair.

Thai language is the official language, but some people also speak a dialect or an ethnic language.  English is taught in every school, so some people can speak English.

Thailand has video games and some children enjoy playing them on their computers.

Usually the school hours are from 8:00am until 3:00pm.

They play soccer, badminton or other games with their friends.  Some children participate in clubs at school or in boy scouts or girl scouts.

Usually people don’t use elephants for transportation.  Tourists enjoy riding them for a short time just for fun.

The children have one school break from mid-March until the end of May and from Mid-October until mid-November.

The flood covered most of the country.  Between July 2011 and January 2012 65 of Thailand’s 77 provinces were declared flood disaster zones in the north, northeast and central regions.  In some places the flood water was about 6 1/2 feet deep.

Zion-Concord L.S. How do they travel?

In their neighborhoods and towns, many children ride bicycles.  It’s very common to see Thai people riding small motorbikes, riding on motorcycle taxis, riding in buses or in the back of a pickup truck with a cover over it or in their own cars.  If they live near a river or canal, they may ride in small boats.

Lions What do buddists believe?

Buddhists believe that everyone gets what they deserve.  If people are good, then they will be rewarded.  If people are bad, then they will be punished.  Buddhists believe that people should work hard to get rid of any desires or wanting anything they don’t have.  Buddhists believe that everyone should work hard to not do bad things, not say bad things, not think bad things, not have bad emotions.  Buddhists believe that after people die they come back to life as another person or as an animal, an insect or some other creature.  Buddhists believe that if people are good in this life, then their next life will be better; if they’re bad in this life, then their next life will be worse than the life life they have now.

Thailand time is 12 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time in the United States.

Yes, and many of the instruments you hear are traditional Thai instruments.

The flood started in northern Thailand in July 2011 and finally ended in January 2012.

Thai schools don’t have hot lunches like some schools in the United States.  In small towns and rural areas the students go home for lunch.  In larger cities the bigger schools will have a number of stalls where local people see different kinds of prepared food that the children can buy for lunch.

The missionary needs more missionaries and volunteers to come and work in Thailand and needs the Holy Spirit to show Thai people the truth that Jesus died for their sins.  So, the missionary also needs all of you to pray that God will provide these needs.

Even when Buddhist people do good things to avoid suffering, they know that they still do bad things.  Everyone does some bad things, even when they try very hard not to.  So, they feel guilty.

Thai people eat steamed white rice nearly every meal.  They enjoy eating curries, spicy soups, seafood and fish.

Many schools require the girls to have short hair, but others allow long hair.  Because the weather in Thailand is hot every day (78-98F), many Thai people prefer to have short hair.

Please pray that they’ll hear about Jesus and that God will give them faith to believe that Jesus died for their sins, so that they can go to heaven.  Also, please pray that their families will believe in Jesus.

Their parents will be upset with them, their grandparents and aunts and uncles and neighbors also will be upset with them.

Unfortunately, no, there are no Lutheran schools in Thailand.  We pray that we’ll be able to have some soon.  But, we thank God that we do have some Catholic schools and other Christian schools where the children learn about Jesus.

Boys usually wear shorts, short sleeved shirts or T-shirts and girls usually wear skirts or shorts and short sleeved blouses.  Most Thai people wear Western style clothing, except for some people in small towns and villages in rural areas, who wear sarongs.

troy Are there a lot of American Lutheran missionaries there?

No, we have just one American Lutheran missionary here and a couple of American Lutheran Bible translators.

napa What is the hottest temperature it has ever been?

44.5 degrees Celsius, which is 112.1 degrees Fahrenheit.

lhm Is there an original Buddha statue? If so where is it?

Possibly the oldest Buddha statue in Thailand is in a temple in the northern city of Chiang Mai.  It was made in 1465 AD.  It’s very possible that there are older Buddha statues in other countries in Asia.

lhm What are some common jobs?

About 65% of Thai people live in rural areas, so many of them are involved in jobs that have something to do with agriculture.  Also, a lot of people work in factories, small shops or as government workers.  Of course we also have many people working in business, as teachers, lawyers or in the fishing industry.  Quite a large number of people work in the tourist industry.

The average height for Thai women is 5’1″ – 5’9″.  The average height for Thai men is 5’3″ – 5’11”.

napa How big to coconuts grow in Thailand?

Coconut trees can be as tall as 20-25 feet.  The coconuts can be as big as a soccer ball.

napa Why are there more Buddhists than Christians in Thailand?

Buddhism came to Thailand long before Christianity did.  Most Thai people are Buddhists because their parents, relatives and neighbors are Buddhists.  As small children they naturally followed Buddhist beliefs that they learned from their parents.  Many Thai people have never learned about Jesus and his teachings, so they haven’t had a chance to become Christians.

lhm Do the kids have any electronic games?

Yes, children in middle class and upper class families often have electronic games and computers.

napa What are the order of your seaons?

From July through October we have the rainy season and from November through June we have the dry season.  The weather is hot throughout the year.

lhm What do they drink?

The most common drink is water.  Tea is the second-most common.  Most Thai people also drink some fruit juices, soft drinks and beer.  Many enjoy drinking coffee or iced coffee.

lhm Do they eat any kind of meat?

Chicken, pork and beef are the meats eaten most often, along with fish and seafood.

Portbc What kind of animals live in Thailand?

Elephants, water buffalo, crocodiles, monkeys, cows, pigs, dogs, cats, rabbits, tigers and others.

napa Why did the name change from Siam to Thailand?

There was a bloodless revolution which forced the king (who had absolute power at that time) to allow the people to have a constitution and a democratic style government.  With this new freedom the country was renamed Thailand (Meuang Thai), which means “free land.”

Portbc What kind of restaurants are in Thailand?

Almost any kind of restaurant can be found in Thailand, especially in Bangkok and some of the other large cities.  We have seafood restaurants, hot pot restaurants, buffets, noodle restaurants, restaurants with food from many other countries, lots of Western fast food restaurants (McDonalds, KFC, Burger King, Subway, Pizza Hut, etc) and many small, family-owned restaurants.

LHM provides radio programs for stations in Northeast, Central and Southern Thailand.  Another Christian organization, Voice of Peace, has radio stations in Northern Thailand.

lhm How many languages do they speak?

All schools use Thai language, many children speak another language at home (Thai dialects or ethnic languages) and all schools teach English, but many people don’t learn English well.

lhm Do they have desks for the kids to sit at in school?

Yes, they have desks or large tables with benches.  In the videos the students were sitting on the floor because LHM Thailand was doing special activities with them.

lhm What does McDonald’s serve for food?

McDonalds in Thailand has some of the same food as in North America (hamburger, cheeseburger, Big Mac, fish sandwich,  Chicken McNuggets, french fries, shakes, soft drinks).  But McDonalds in Thailand also has rice, Samurai Pork Burger, Spicy Chicken Burger, Spicy McWings, chicken porridge and others.

lhm How many people are in Thailand?

The population of Thailand is about 67 million people.

lhm How hot and cold does it get?

The temperature often reaches mid-90sF to high 90sF, but most days are probably around 90F.  In southern and Central Thailand the temperature almost never drops below about 78F.  In the mountains in northern Thailand in January the temperature may drop as low as 34F.

napa Question from Milan: Why was The King and I banned from Thailand?

Because in the movie the king looked foolish, weak and appeared to be controlled by a foreign woman.  That’s not a good image for a king.

napa Another question: How old are the temples, and are they really decorated with real gold?

Some temples are hundreds of years old.  Some of the gold decorations are gold-colored paint, some are paint with some real gold added and some decorations are real gold.

napa Question from Reece: What is the main difference between Buddhism and Christianity?

The main difference is forgiveness.  In Christianity Jesus pays the price for everyone’s sins, so we are forgiven and don’t need to be punished for our sins.  In Buddhism there is no forgiveness or grace or mercy.  Everyone gets what they deserve.  Each person is punished for every wrong action, word, thought and feeling.  Each person must work very hard to do good deeds to offset their bad deeds.  In Buddhism they want to be sure to do more good deeds than bad deeds, so they’ll be rewarded with a better situation in their next life.
